Rob’s guidance for water blasting the holds

Waterblasting of the holds arguably is one of the most important jobs in the preparation of a competition. After the climbing surface itself, the condition of the holds are vital for a successful comp.

The competition holds are not manufactured from polyurethane like most climbing holds, they are made from polyester, a much heavier, more fragile compound. These holds do retain their texture for much longer. The downside, compounded by the extra weight is that their fragility is something we need to have a far greater respect for when cleaning them.

  • Please make sure you do not drop them on the concrete, from any height.

  • Please make sure you are waterblasting them on a rubber, plastic or wooden surface, not on the concrete.

When waterblasting, make sure you get the nozzle nice and close (around 40-50mm away) to the holds and be sure to get in underneath the ‘jug’ part of the hold to get all the muck out of the texture. You are not trying to make them ‘look pretty’, you are trying to clean out all the rubber, dirt, sweat and chalk that clogs the texture and makes them slippery. Get in hard into the texture.

Do not waterblast the IFSC barcode on the front of the hold. This indicates that the hold has been tested and approved for competition. We pay a lot extra for this testing stamp, so please don’t knock it off with the waterblaster.

When stacking the holds for drying, once again have respect for their fragility. Thank you so much for volunteering your time to help out. Honestly, without everyone helping it would be a long task, so your help is greatly appreciated.
